Gothic Voices Medieval Choir directed by Pat O’Scannell
A concert of Music of Spain and England written before 1588, the date of the Battle of the Spanish Armada.
The program will feature English works by 15th Century composers John Dunstable and Walter Frye, and Spanish works from several important early medieval codexes, including the Libre Vermell de Montserrat, Codex las Huelgas, and selections from the ‘Missa de Barcelona’, and anonymous polyphonic mass of the 14th Century.
The music is rich and rhythmically intricate, and is based ‘modes’, the medieval equivalent of scales, but very nuanced compared to our modern major and minor scales.
Join our voyage of discovery to times and places we only hear about in history books!
Ensemble Fontegara, Renaissance Recorders will open for Gothic Voices playing selections from the Odhecaton a collection of French Chansons (songs) by early Northern Masters such as Josquin des Prez, Johannes Ockeghem and Heinrich Isaac.
Ashland based ensemble, Gothic Voices Medieval Choir, directed by Pat O’Scannell, specializes in performing works by composers active before the 1500’s. Musical genres range from sacred polyphony such as Motets, Masses, Marian Antiphons and Plainchant, to secular carols such as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, The Roman de Fauvel and others. The Choir has performed several times for audiences in Southern Oregon.
