On May 19, 2018, Musica Matrix will present a concert Spanish songs & romances from the Siglo de Oro and beyond. With guitarist, vihuelist and lutenist James Bishop- Edwards and mezzo soprano Pat O’Scannell, the program is a sweeping tour of repertoire from the Renaissance through the modern period.
The Renaissance repertoire highlights composers of the Spanish vihuelist school such as Alonso Mudarra, Luis Milan, Enriquez de Valderrabano, and Diego Pisador.
Villancicos or ‘little village songs’ are simple and pastoral in theme, while the exquisite romances are virtuosic displays, and reflect themes of Moorish occupation, descriptions of its colorful festivals and celebration in poetry and song of its former glories in battle.
The concert will be held at Ashland Springs Hotel, in the Crystal Room at 7 PM. Tickets are $20, no reserve seating.
