Missa Notre Dame Mass of Our Lady

by Guillaume de Machaut

Featuring guest artist James Bishop-Edwards on lute

Gothic Voices Medieval Choir will perform Missa Notre Dame Mass of Our Lady, a polyphonic mass composed by Guillaume de Machaut in the forteenth century.

The Messe de Nostre Dame consists of 5 movements, the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, followed by the dismissal Ite, missa est. Machaut wrote the Mass for four voices rather than the more common three, adding a contratenor voice that moved in the same low range as the tenor, sometimes replacing it as the lowest voice resulting in an amazingly evocative, delicate and beautiful work. It is regarded by many as one of the masterpieces of medieval music and, indeed, of all religious music.
