There are thousands of songs that could be described as falling into this category of love songs with these having been arranged for solo voice and lute accompaniment.

The songs are lyrical and flexible, pairing easily the subtle rhythms of the language and catchy melodies that cannot be easily pinned down by any modern concept of meter. Lovers of classical guitar will appreciate the crystal tones of its early cousin the lute, and lovers of art song will appreciate the clarity and warmth of the vocal style.

Rigaudon I & II from Petites Sonates, Op. 66, Vol. 1

Michal Palzewicz and Pat O’Scannell

Musica Matrix presents DUO JETTÉ with Pat O’Scannell & Michal Palzewicz playing violas da gamba in a program of French Baroque music by Boismortier, Couperin and several composers who wrote specifically for the viol such as Forqueray and Marais.

The Viola da Gamba dominated the scene as a solo instrument before the gambas were replaced by the louder members of the violin family, which were more suitable to balance with increasingly large orchestras.

Gambas are not related to the violin family, but instead developed alongside it. Gambas are more related to fretted plucked instruments such as the guitar and lute. The style of playing is gentler, with an underhand bow hold controlled by the fingers on the hair of the bow.

The instrument has either six or seven strings, depending on the time period and genre. The chordal style of playing is called ‘Lyra Viol’, and the practice of writing for Gambas began in England in the Elizabethan period. The French innovated a seventh string so that the instrument could better provide its own bass line.

With Kevin Carr & Pat O’Scannell

Saturday, August 17, 2019 – 4:00 PM
Ashland location given at time of reservation.

Kevin Carr – fiddler story teller piper
I tell stories and play traditional folk instruments. From the Fillmore West to the Oregon Country Fair, from the former Soviet Union to Spain, from Alaska to Mexico, I’ve traveled to play with and learn from traditional musicians, to gather stories to share and to connect with folks through the ecstatic medium of music. I do solo shows such as “The Other Pipes – exotic and little known Bagpiping traditions of the World”, ” Stories from the Musical Realms – Concerning Inspiration and the Music between the Notes”, “My Grandfather’s Fiddle”, “Fiddle Fables – Stories by and about Fiddlers” with tunes appropriate and appropriated. I play with various groups: Wake the Dead, Hillbillies from Mars, Les Tetes de Violon, Men of Worth, Verdegaio and The Family Carr.

Pat O’Scannell – singer whistle recorder & bodhrán
I have been into traditional music since childhood. My Celtic band CRÍONA played in West Coast venues in the 80’s-90’s and made several recordings. I have appeared at the Vancouver Music Festival (B.C.), Seattle Folk Life Festival, The Peter Britt Festival and Oregon Shakespeare Festival, among others. I have worked with Kevin Burke, Michael Beglan, Christy Deleney, Noel McTiernan, Thomaseen Foley, James Kiegher and of course Kevin Carr. I study Irish Gaelic for purposes of singing, and teach regional and historic vocal styles of Ireland, Britain and the Continent, whistle, bones and bodhrán.

Recent appearances include the Rogue World Ensemble, SORS and O’Shea’s. Appearances in California, Oregon, Washington, Canada, Indiana, Texas, Mexico & Ireland.
